  Bowen Therapy

Bowen therapy incorporates specific soft tissue release to stimulate receptors that permit the body to self-correct dysfunctions and restore the body to homeostasis. Bowen therapy aims to treat the cause of any problems rather than just addressing the symptoms. Practitioners claim that Bowen Therapy can provide permanent and significant healing outcomes through addressing dysfunction in the body's connective tissue and fascia.

Bowen Therapy was developed by Tom Bowen in Geelong, Victoria. While he was massaging at football players in Geelong, he observed that there appeared to be a common link between seemingly unrelated painful musculoskeletal issues. He believed that the causal link originated in the body's fascia.

After many years of clinical investigation and study of related modalities he invented a set of particular moves associated with differing sequences. The moves were intended to provide release of the fascia along with stimulating physiological responses. These changes often resulted in instant resolution of the presenting conditions.

Fascia is a unique form of connective tissue that forms a three dimensional web encasing all of the body's tissues and organs. Dysfunction of the fascia can influence every muscle, organ or nerve in the body. Research into fascia has shown that it is the largest sensory organ in the body. Fascia is loaded with a range of receptors that can influence the body's neuro-muscular physiology in intricate ways.

In 1975 the government review of Bowen's work concluded that he was seeing of the order of
13 000 people in a year and obtaining a success rate in his practice of over 80% of presenting pain conditions.

One important aspect of Bowen Therapy is that it is holistic and does not rely on a comprehensive diagnosis of the problem and its origins. Bowen Therapy treats the whole body, and its holistic effects are observed in clients who benefit in areas over and above the conditions that they wished to be treated. For example, many supporters of Bowen therapy claim that after treatment they have higher energy levels, reduced stress and are more able to deal with emotional challenges.

Bowen therapy movements are often small, spaced apart and gentle. This results in Bowen therapy providing almost a meditative state for which the brain can relax into a state suitable for repair and healing to occur. This is little doubt that Bowen Therapy is suitable for all ages from newborn to elderly.
